General Questions
MGO board is composed of magnesium oxide (MgO), magnesium chloride (MgCl₂), perlite, and a reinforcing fiberglass mesh. The mix creates a rigid, durable panel free of formaldehyde, fly ash, and crystalline silica.
No. MGO board is a distinct material. Unlike drywall (gypsum), MGO is moisture-resistant and will not deteriorate when exposed to humidity. Unlike cement board, MGO is lighter, more flexible, and contains no Portland cement — making it more eco-friendly and easier to work with.
MagSheathing™ MGO boards are ASTM-tested and achieve an A1 (non-combustible) fire rating, the highest classification available. This makes them suitable for fire-rated wall and ceiling assemblies in both residential and commercial construction.
Yes. MagSheathing™ contains no formaldehyde, no crystalline silica, and no fly ash. It is safe for people with allergies, asthma, and chemical sensitivities, and will not off-gas harmful compounds. It is an excellent choice for maintaining high Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).
Installation Questions
Yes. MagSheathing™ can be scored and snapped using a utility knife (similar to drywall), or cut with a standard circular saw, jigsaw, or table saw. Use a carbide-tipped blade for best results, and wear a dust mask when cutting.
Use corrosion-resistant screws or nails (galvanized, stainless steel, or similar). For wall applications, screws are preferred — 1-5/8" coarse-thread drywall screws work well for 6mm–12mm boards. Pre-drilling near edges is recommended to prevent cracking.
Yes. MagSheathing™ is suitable for exterior sheathing, cladding substrates, soffits, and fascias. It is freeze/thaw tested for 36+ months and performs well in the cold, wet winters common across Canada. However, prolonged direct water exposure (e.g. standing water) should be avoided.
Virtually any finish works on MagSheathing™ — paint, plaster, stucco, tile, stone veneer, wallpaper, and more. The smooth surface accepts adhesives and coatings well. Use a quality bonding primer before painting for best results.
